October is LGBTQ+ History Month (AND Black History Month if you're British), but it's also home to Halloween (the gayest holiday), international coming out day, Toby's spouse's birthday (extremely important). October is an important month for so many reasons, and many of those reasons are why Toby chose it as their name forever.
Come join us once every month at The Midnight Oil for a double feature arts and crafts extravaganza where Toby will host a documentary featuring queer history and heritage followed by a film that is just as queer. All materials for arts and crafts will be provided as usual, as well as popcorn 👀 No need to bring your own materials!
April's documentary will be Paris is Burning (1990) at 6:30pm followed by The Birdcage (1996) right after!
Queer history is complex and varied, and the words we use for ourselves evolve constantly. Given the nature and age of some of the films and documentaries that Toby has archived, please keep in mind that there will be some language that is outdated, or has fallen out of favor in modern times. Take care of yourself and take a look at the subject matter before watching with us at the cafe to be sure there's no surprises. Our history can feel like it is often tragic and extremely emotional to see on screen, but it's important to watch and to remember. The subject of violence, death, and fighting for survival will likely be present, but so will queer joy, love, and family.
