Showcase for a Local Late Immigrant Folk Artist
Chilean Immigrant and J.P. McCaskey Alumni, Sophia Gonzalez-Iñiquez, Stylized as Eoøia, remixed the common object into nautical, floral, and spiritual works of art. You are invited to witness works and create your own on Sunday, January 18, 1pm-8pm at The Midnight Oil—rocks, slates, and glassware will be provided
My name is Israel Gonzalez, I am a Lancastrian through and through. In the last two years I have found a community at The Midnight Oil, and felt this space was right to hold a tribute Art Show for My Tía Sophia (Eoøia) who had passed away in 2023 to bone cancer. She was a woman who had a passion for God and the Arts. In passing she leaves behind memories of her craft. Her constant message for me was “Don’t forget God”. I understood her insistence on the power of unconditional love:
“If I speak in the tongues of humans and of angels but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 And if I have prophetic powers and understand all mysteries and all knowledge and if I have all faith so as to remove mountains but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give away all my possessions and if I hand over my body so that I may boast[a] but do not have love, I gain nothing. -1 Corinthians 13:1-3(NRSV)
As I stand in the intersection of revering God, Loving my neighbor, and expansive gender expression, I hope to share a day of Art and Affinity at The Midnight Oil With you
